TO USE IN MY CW CLASS THIS FALL:
Have a writing prompt on the board/PowerPoint when they walk in.
Discussion board for “journaling” or folder-have a printer in class so we can print them off
Give long periods of time for free writing and/or respond to writing prompts
Do lots of writing for the first 6 weeks of class, then have them go back to choose a journal to enlarge into an essay.
In syllabus include journaling time at the start of each class.
Contract for points rather than grading-no red marks-just a check
Create a comment key-like in mycomp lab but don’t use this for their journals.
Give the option of sketching and paragraph explanation.
Having all of them write levels the playing field.
Posters in hallway sharing what they have read.
Start with a poem or passage of scripture to respoins to.
Slow down!!!!
Asking the right questions-
20 minutes for a mini lesson, no more.
