I had never thought of the writing process from this point of view. Fascinating expose. This will impact my teaching this fall. Instead of teaching the “proper form” of 6 kinds of essays, I plan to move through the required types of essays with writings that follow more of his suggestions, starting with moving from self to one other person to the class at large and to the outside world. We have a school newspaper and yearbook we can use for publication. I may have the students do all the prep kinds of writing and then have them choose the types of essay they want to try first but do this after the first month, but before mid-term. And then use an essay as their mid-term or a reflective paper on what they have learned in class thus far.
